Onion Juice for Cough: Natural Home Remedy for Relief

Onion juice for cough: How this home remedy heals naturally.

Onion juice

Since our great-grandmothers' time, they knew an effective home remedy for colds: onion juice! Onion cough syrup provides relief for coughs and sore throats. How to make it, how it works, and what to consider when taking it.

"That really made my eyes water" – Those who say this have usually experienced something painful. But onions also represent the other side of the sensation scale: comfort, relief, ease. As a home remedy for coughs, the juice of this tear-inducing vegetable soothes the urge to cough and tastes better with honey or sugar than expected.

Onion juice for cough since great-grandmothers' time.

Onion juice for cough is undoubtedly great-grandmothers' patented recipe during the cold season. This is not only because onions have been cultivated for about 5000 years. The essential oils in onion juice have antibacterial, pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and germicidal properties. This makes onions the perfect natural cough syrup – aside from the fact that they also contain flavonoids, vitamin C, trace elements, and minerals.

Onion syrup with honey for cough relief.

The classic recipes for onion cough syrup are made with either honey or sugar. Honey is better suited because it also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.

The preparation according to the following recipe is extremely simple:

1. Finely chop two white or red onions (100 grams), for example, into cubes. The finer, the better – the onion juice will form more quickly.

2. Fill the pieces into a glass, cup, or jar with a screw-on lid.

3. Add two tablespoons of honey – for vegans, sugar or honey alternatives are suitable.

4. Let it sit overnight and pour the resulting liquid through a sieve into a sterile container such as a resealable glass bottle.

5. The homemade onion syrup is ready.

6. Take one tablespoon several times a day.

Onion syrup with onion and rock sugar soothes mucous membranes.

The ingredients soothe the mucous membranes, liquefy the secretions on the mucous membranes, facilitate the expectoration of mucus, and have cough-suppressant properties. This also applies to the version with rock sugar. Alternatively, white sugar can be used. The recipe is as follows:

1. Finely chop two white or red onions (100 grams), for example, into cubes.

2. Put them together with some rock sugar in a pot and bring to a low boil.

3. Let the mixture cool down and press it through a towel into a bowl or jar with a screw-on lid.

4. Take the juice several times a day – one tablespoon each time.

Natural sweeteners in onion syrup for children.

If you want to prepare onion syrup for children and avoid using sugar, you can also use a natural sweetener. Xylitol, for example, works very well for this purpose. The sugar substitute is made from birch bark. But be careful: If the onion cough syrup is used to relieve coughs in animals, caution is required with xylitol. Specifically, xylitol is toxic and causes xylitol poisoning in dogs.

Plantain and thyme as medicinal herbs in onion syrup.

The effectiveness of homemade onion juice for cough can be enhanced by adding some medicinal herbs to the basic recipe. However, this prolongs the infusion time by at least two weeks – so it is only recommended to a limited extent for severe coughs. The respective herbs are added to the chopped onion and honey or sugar in the jar. Suitable herbs include:

1. Plantain or thyme (both are available almost year-round).

2. In spring: coltsfoot, primrose flowers, young spruce tips.

Prepare onion cough syrup at the start of the cold season.

If you are using medicinal herbs in your onion cough syrup, you can chop up three or four onions. Due to its sugar content, the onion syrup will keep well in the refrigerator for several weeks. The onion syrup can also be produced prophylactically at the beginning of the cold season.

Let cough syrup melt in your mouth as a home remedy.

After the homemade onion syrup is ready, it should not be kept in a warm place as it will start to ferment. In order for the sweet-tasting cough syrup to have its full effect, it should not be swallowed immediately but moved around in the mouth for a few moments. Infants and babies should not be given a tablespoon of onion syrup but only a teaspoon several times a day. Despite the healthy ingredients, some things should be taken into consideration when using homemade onion juice for cough:

1. Allergy sufferers should check the ingredients for compatibility before consumption.

2. Larger amounts of onion cough syrup should not be consumed for several months. It contains diphenylamine, which could cause kidney damage.

3.Onion juice can irritate the eyes and nose.

4. It can also cause bloating, irritations in the gastrointestinal tract, and a change in the smell of the skin and breath.

Do not take onion syrup for cough for too long.

As with any cold or cough illness, the same applies to the treatment with homemade onion cough syrup or cough teas: If the symptoms have not subsided after a week, you should consult a doctor. But until then, you can confidently say "Cheers to good health!" with every tablespoon of onion syrup made from natural ingredients.
